South Korea’s Former First Lady Arrested in Sweeping Corruption Investigation
Former South Korean First Lady Kim Kyun May Destroy Evidence of Corruption If Not Arrested; Court
Kim Kyun, wife of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, has been arrested on charges of serious financial crimes in South Korea as part of a crackdown on corruption.
According to the International News Agency, a South Korean court ordered the arrest of the former first lady, expressing concern that Kim Kyun may destroy evidence.
The prosecution said in court that Kim Kyun faces several serious charges, including receiving valuable jewelry, gifts and cash, manipulating the stock market by obtaining confidential information, interfering in the election process through influence and making illegal investments by taking advantage of her position.
Court documents state that all of the former first lady’s crimes are serious violations of South Korea’s anti-corruption laws.
Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol is already in custody on charges of attempting to impose martial law and other charges, and his wife’s arrest puts his political future in grave jeopardy.
South Korea has a history of transparent investigations and prosecutions of its leaders. Several presidents and high-ranking officials have been convicted of corruption before.
