Putin, Iranian President Discuss Future of Nuclear Program in Phone Call
According to the Iranian presidency, Peshkerian thanked Russia for supporting Iran’s “right to enrich uranium”
Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Peshkerian discussed Iran’s nuclear program, at a time when Britain, France and Germany are threatening to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran.
European powers have warned that they could reimpose old sanctions under a “snapback mechanism” if Iran does not agree to limit uranium enrichment and restore cooperation with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors.
According to Iranian state media, Iran will hold talks with the European Union and three European countries (Britain, France and Germany) in Geneva on Tuesday. The meeting will be at the level of deputy foreign ministers.
The talks are the second time the sides have sat down at the table since the 12-day war between Iran and Israel in mid-June and the US strikes. The previous meeting was held in Istanbul on July 25.
According to the Kremlin, President Putin discussed Iran’s nuclear program with the Iranian president in a phone call, but details were not disclosed.
According to the Iranian presidency, Peshkerian thanked Russia for supporting Iran’s “right to enrichment” and made it clear that Iran has never sought and will never seek nuclear weapons.
It should be noted that Russia and Iran have further strengthened political, military and economic ties since the war in Ukraine, while Iran often coordinates its positions with Russia and China before major negotiations.
According to the Russian newspaper Kommersant, Moscow is strongly opposed to “snapback” sanctions.
