Us National Guard Troops To Patrol Washington Dc Armed With Weapons
Crime Crackdown May Extend To Chicago, Says President Trump
Washington: US National Guard troops will patrol the streets of Washington DC armed with weapons starting Sunday night, as part of President Donald Trump’s crackdown on crime.
According to officials, National Guard personnel will patrol with M17 pistols or M4 rifles. However, there is no clear detail on how many troops will patrol with weapons.
Hundreds of unarmed National Guard troops have been on the streets of Washington DC for the past two weeks, while President Trump declared a crime emergency in the area.
Defense Secretary Pat Hegseth last week authorized the troops to carry weapons.
The National Guard’s Joint Task Force-DC said in a written statement that its personnel will use force only as a last resort and in response to an immediate threat of death or serious bodily harm.
President Trump has said he could potentially extend his crackdown on crime to Chicago, another city controlled by Democrats.
Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Trump does not have the authority to deploy troops to Chicago, as the Pentagon is making preliminary plans.
