Ukraine Drone Attack on Major Russian Oil Depot, Massive Fire Breaks Out
Flights at Sochi airport temporarily suspended after attack
The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has intensified, with a Ukrainian drone strike hitting a large oil depot near the Russian Black Sea resort city of Sochi, sparking a massive fire.
According to Russian officials, Krasnodar Region Governor Veniamin Kondratyev confirmed on Telegram that the drone’s debris hit a fuel tank, after which 127 firefighters were busy extinguishing the fire. Flights at Sochi airport were temporarily suspended due to the incident.
Meanwhile, a Russian missile strike in the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv destroyed several residential homes and infrastructure. Local officials say at least seven civilians were injured in the attack, three of whom have been taken to hospital.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the attack on the Sochi refinery was part of a larger drone operation by Ukraine, which targeted several facilities in Ryazan, Penza and Voronezh. The governor of Voronezh said four people were injured in one attack.
According to Russian defense officials, 93 Ukrainian drones were intercepted last night, 60 of which were in the Black Sea region.
The Ukrainian Air Force also reported that Russia fired 83 or 76 drones and 7 missiles during the night, of which 61 were destroyed. However, 16 drones and 6 missiles reached their targets.
All this came after at least 31 people were killed and hundreds injured in a heavy Russian attack on Kyiv last Thursday. Ukrainian officials say that Russia fired more than 300 drones and 8 cruise missiles that day, which was described as the deadliest incident since the 2022 invasion.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for tougher sanctions on Russia from the international community over the escalating tensions. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has condemned the Russian attacks and hinted at new sanctions against Moscow.
Trump had previously said Putin had 50 days to stop the war or face heavy tariffs on Russian exports, including oil. On Monday, he issued a new 10-12-day ultimatum, with a deadline of August 8.
