Most visas have been canceled due to law violations, overstays, and various crimes
Washington: The Trump administration has canceled more than 6,000 foreign student visas so far this year under a tough immigration policy. Most visas have been canceled due to law violations, overstays, and various crimes.
According to the US State Department, about 4,000 student visas were canceled due to various violations, including driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, theft, and other crimes, while 200 to 300 visas were canceled on charges of supporting terrorism.
A senior State Department official said that some visas were also canceled due to involvement in activities against US foreign policy. He said that in this process, the strict scrutiny of social media and the screening system have also been tightened.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he had revoked the visas of “hundreds or perhaps thousands of people”, including many students, because they were involved in activities that were “contrary to US interests and policy”.
However, critics have called the move an attack on the First Amendment (freedom of speech) of the US Constitution and said the Trump administration has adopted “unnecessary harshness”.
It should be recalled that this year the State Department had instructed all US diplomats abroad to monitor applications from people involved in anti-American and political activities.
