Johannesburg: South African police have announced that they have arrested nearly 1,000 illegal immigrants working in illegal gold mines in the northeast.
Police spokesman Donald Mdhluli told AFP that the operation lasted all week and targeted illegal underground mines near Barberton in Mpumalanga province.
“There are still many illegal miners underground, and as they come out, the police are arresting them,” the spokesman said.
The site is located near the border of Eswatini and Mozambique. The mine in question is called the Sheba Mine, which is owned by Barberton Mines.
According to the company: “Earlier this year, when the mine was declared unsafe and dozens of workers were evacuated, there was a protest by workers and the local population. Now we know what the real problem was.”
