KYIV — A Russian airstrike on a detention facility in central Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region overnight has killed at least 16 people and injured more than 35 others, Ukrainian officials reported early Tuesday.
According to Ivan Fedorov, head of the regional military administration, the strike destroyed the prison and also damaged nearby homes. “Sixteen people lost their lives, and dozens were wounded,” he stated.
Ukraine’s Human Rights Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets condemned the attack, calling it further evidence of Russian “war crimes.” “People held in places of detention do not lose their right to life and protection,” he emphasized.
Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 37 drones and two missiles during the night. Air defense systems successfully shot down 32 drones.
In the neighboring Dnipropetrovsk region, additional Russian attacks killed at least four people. In Kamyanske, a missile strike killed two individuals, wounded five others, and damaged a hospital, said regional governor Sergiy Lysak. Separate strikes in Synelnykivsky and Velykomykhaylivska districts left two more civilians dead, including a 75-year-old woman, and several others wounded.
Meanwhile, in southern Russia, a Ukrainian drone strike killed one person in the Rostov region, according to acting governor Yuri Slyusar. “A car was damaged on Ostrovsky Street. Unfortunately, the driver who was in it died,” he stated on Telegram.
