Russia Warns US On Deployment of Nuclear Submarines: 'Be Careful With Nuclear Statements'
Trump did not say whether the submarines would be armed with nuclear weapons or only nuclear-powered
MOSCOW: Russia has warned that “extreme caution” is needed in rhetoric on nuclear issues after US President Donald Trump announced the deployment of nuclear submarines.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday: “Russia takes the issue of nuclear non-proliferation very seriously, and we believe that everyone should be extremely careful with nuclear statements.”
The statement came as President Trump announced the deployment of two nuclear submarines in response to alleged “provocative remarks” by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
Trump did not say whether the submarines would be nuclear-armed or nuclear-powered, nor did he reveal their location — a practice that is kept secret by the US military.
The tensions escalated after an online spat in which Medvedev reacted sharply to Trump’s ultimatums against Russia over the war in Ukraine.
Medvedev said: “Every new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war — not only between Russia and Ukraine, but also against the United States.”
Medvedev, who is currently the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, was Russia’s president from 2008 to 2012, while Vladimir Putin used him as an “interim president” to avoid constitutional restrictions.
The Ukrainian president’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, supported Trump’s move, saying: “The concept of peace through strength works. As soon as the American submarines appeared, a drunk Russian who was making nuclear threats suddenly fell silent.”
