LISBON: A tragic accident occurred in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, on Wednesday evening when the city’s famous Gloria funicular (cable train) derailed and crashed into a building.
At least 15 people were killed and 18 others were injured in the accident. According to the Portuguese Emergency Medical Service, 5 of the wounded are in critical condition, while 13 others have minor injuries, including a child.
The accident occurred near Avenida da Liberdade at 6:05 pm local time.
According to authorities, it could not be confirmed how many people were in the vehicle at the time of the accident. According to initial reports, the cable installed on the track suddenly broke, causing the vehicle to lose control and crash into a nearby building.
Rescue teams immediately took action and evacuated all the trapped people. There were 62 emergency personnel and 22 vehicles at the scene of the accident.
Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moidas described the tragedy as a tragic moment for the city, while Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed their condolences to the families of the victims.
