The implementation of the Low-Emission Zones (ZFE / EPZ) law of January 1, 2025, has begun in 40 cities, including the capital of France, Paris.
This law will be implemented in every urban area in France where more than 150,000 citizens live.
Such areas are ordered to be made Low Emission Zones or where smoke or pollution emissions are low or non-existent.
This law has come into force in about 40 cities and has begun to be strictly implemented, with implementation beginning in Paris and Lyon, where a complete ban on Crit’Air 3 vehicles (petrol before 2006, diesel before 2010) has been imposed, although a special pass is allowed for 12 days a year.
Strasbourg, Rouen and Marseille have temporary restrictions, but there has also been a public backlash against the rules, particularly for low-income earners who are considering adjustments.
In Paris, a restricted traffic zone has been in place in the old city centre (arrondissements 1–4) since November 2024.
After coming into force immediately, it will now be implemented from April 2025, with only certain vehicles allowed to enter.
With the help of AI-enabled cameras, the law is being implemented, and traffic violations are being monitored and offenders will face heavy fines.
