Minister of Defense and Minister of Environment also killed in helicopter crash
A plane crash in Ghana killed 8 people, including the defense minister and the environment minister.
According to the international news agency, the helicopter was flying from the capital Accra to the southern city of Obuasi, which is an important mining center.
During the flight, the helicopter lost contact with the control room, prompting an immediate search operation.
The accident occurred in the southern Ashanti region of the country. Where smoke rising from the helicopter wreckage can be seen from afar.
The cause of the accident has not yet been determined, but weather conditions may also be a factor.
The Ghanaian military, Civil Aviation Authority and other relevant agencies are conducting a joint investigation to determine the causes of the accident.
Ghana’s Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, confirmed that the dead included Defense Minister Edward Omaane Bawama and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtaza Mohammed.
The two ministers were among the dead, along with three other passengers and three crew members.
The chief of staff said in a video statement that on the instructions of the president, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across the country until further notice.
He described the accident as a national tragedy and expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.
