Train dragged bus onto railway line, increasing casualties
MEXICO: A freight train hit a double-decker passenger bus in a horrific accident on Monday, killing at least 10 people and injuring more than 41, according to Mexican state officials.
The accident occurred on a highway in the municipality of Atlacomulco, in the state of Mexico, when the bus was trying to cross a railway track during slow-moving traffic when the freight train hit the bus at full speed.
The collision completely tore off the upper part of the bus. The train dragged the bus onto the railway line, increasing casualties.
According to Adrian Hernandez, the general coordinator of the state’s Civil Protection, the driver of the bus has been detained while a full investigation into the incident is underway.
Photos and videos show the horrific aftermath of the accident, with the roof of the bus completely destroyed and the front windshield shattered.
Immediately after the accident, local residents and rescue teams tried to pull the affected passengers out of the roof of the bus to save them.
A spokesperson for Canadian Pacific Kansas City confirmed that the train was being operated by the company’s subsidiary, CPKC de Mexico.
“We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and express our deepest sympathies,” the spokesperson said. “We are fully cooperating with local authorities.”
Authorities have closed off traffic in both directions at the scene to allow emergency services to reach the victims in a timely manner.
