Lebanese Cabinet Approves Resolution to Disarm Hezbollah Within a Year
Iranian-backed ministers in the cabinet walk out of the cabinet meeting
The Lebanese cabinet approved the implementation of the plan to disarm Hezbollah in a key meeting.
According to the International News Agency, in the cabinet meeting, Lebanon’s civilian leadership has asked the army to prepare a plan under which Hezbollah will be disarmed by the end of the year.
While approving the plan, the cabinet meeting emphasized that weapons in the country should now only be in the possession of state institutions.
Lebanese Information Minister Paul Morcos said that the cabinet approved the general goals included in the proposal presented by US envoy Tom Barak.
These goals include the gradual withdrawal of all non-state armed groups, including Hezbollah, from all Lebanese territory, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon, the cessation of Israeli air strikes, the release of Lebanese prisoners held in Israel, and the final demarcation of the disputed part of the Lebanon-Israel border.
It should be noted that 4 Iranian-backed ministers walked out of this cabinet meeting to record their protest and rejected any such plan.
Regarding this decision of the cabinet meeting, Hezbollah has accused the government of coming under pressure from the United States and Israel.
Hezbollah officials say that until Israel withdraws its forces from five mountainous areas in Lebanon, we will not disarm ourselves.
Meanwhile, US Congressman Daryl Issa, of Lebanese origin, said in a meeting with President Joseph Aoun in Beirut that if the Lebanese army gains complete control of the country, we will insist on a complete withdrawal of Israel.
