Landslides Kill More Than 1,000 In Sudan After Heavy Rains
Darfur Governor Mani Manawi calls the incident a “human tragedy”
A terrifying landslide buried the entire village of Tarasan in Sudan’s Central Darfur region after days of heavy rains, killing more than 1,000 people.
The incident occurred on August 31, according to Fox News. The rebel group Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM-A) claimed that almost all the village’s residents were killed and only one person survived.
The death toll has not yet been independently confirmed because access to the region is limited due to the conflict. However, if these figures are accurate, it would be the worst natural disaster in Sudan’s recent history. Darfur Governor Mani Manawi called the incident a “human tragedy.”
The rebel group has appealed to the United Nations and international organizations to provide immediate assistance in relief operations, the recovery of bodies, and the rehabilitation of the affected area.
