Lamola: If the World Had Acted Sooner, Gaza Genocide Could Have Been Prevented
This was said by South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola in an interview on Tuesday
South Africa has appealed to the international community to recognize the Palestinian state and take effective action to stop Israel’s “ethnic genocide” activities. This was said by South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola in an interview on Tuesday.
He said that countries that had supported Israel are now also saying that this cannot be tolerated any longer, which is an indication that pressure on the Israeli government is increasing.
South Africa filed a case in the United Nations’ highest court (ICJ) in December 2023, saying that Israel’s war in Gaza amounted to “genocide”.
Countries such as Spain, Bolivia, Colombia, Mexico, Turkey, Chile, and Libya have now also joined the case.
“If the world had supported us when we filed the case at the ICJ, this catastrophe would not have happened today,” Foreign Minister Lamola stressed. He added that concerns such as famine, starvation and the complete cleansing of the population in Gaza had already been expressed.
France, Britain and Canada have announced that they will recognize a Palestinian state in September and have called on other countries to do the same.
The Foreign Minister said that relations between South Africa and the United States have reached a low point. He accused the United States of interfering in South Africa’s internal affairs.
President Trump’s false claims of racial discrimination against white South Africans, and the US’s decision to impose a 30 percent tariff after the failure of a trade deal, are also being described as diplomatic failures by the South African government.
