He made this decision to save the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) from further division
Tokyo: Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has decided to resign from his post.
According to foreign media, he made this decision to save the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) from further division.
Shigeru Ishiba assumed the post of Prime Minister in October 2024, but his position was weakened after the party’s worst defeat in the July 2025 elections. After the electoral defeat, the LDP lost its majority in the lower house, which made it difficult for the prime minister to implement policies.
Right-wing leaders within the party continuously pressured Shigeru Ishiba to accept responsibility for the defeat and step down. According to reports, the Minister of Agriculture also met with him personally and urged him to resign.
Prime Minister Ishiba is likely to formally submit his resignation at a press conference on July 7, while elections for a new LDP leadership will be held on September 8.
