Israeli Army Chief and Opposition Leader Oppose Netanyahu's Plan for a Full Military Occupation Of Gaza
The United Nations, Britain and Australia have expressed serious concerns
The Israeli army itself, the opposition, the United Nations and Britain and Australia have expressed serious concerns over the Israeli plan for a full military occupation of Gaza.
According to Israeli media, army chief Eyal Zamir opposed the occupation of Gaza City, saying that it could endanger the lives of the hostages and would also exhaust the soldiers.
He suggested an additional siege around Gaza as an alternative, but refused to call in the military on a large scale.
On the other hand, opposition leader Yair Lapid called Netanyahu’s plan a “disaster” that could lead to further crises. According to him, the occupation would be expensive, long and subject Israel to diplomatic isolation.
Meanwhile, UN human rights chief Volker Turk called on Israel to immediately halt its plan to occupy Gaza, saying it was an obstacle to international law and the two-state solution.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong also opposed the occupation of Gaza and advised Israel to reconsider its decision.
They said the move would neither help release the hostages nor resolve the Palestinian issue, but would only increase bloodshed.
