Former Mali PM Charged Over Social Media Post
Former PM accused of damaging state reputation
In Mali, the military government was charged with charges of damaging the state’s reputation, opposing the legitimate authority and destroying public order.
According to the World News Agency, the allegations against former Prime Minister Musa Mara are based on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that he made on July 4.
In his post after meeting with opposition leaders in Mali’s prisons in July, Musa Mara declared the prisoners a “prisoner of conscience” and expressed “unprecedented solidarity”.
He also wrote that as long as the night is left, the sun will rise! And we will fight for it by all means and as soon as possible.
Mali’s cybercrime unit termed the post a move against the government’s authority and Mara was detained for the second time on Thursday.
According to the Prosecutor of the Cyber Crime Unit of Mali, using words like “prisoners of conscience” and fighting for them is equivalent to challenging the state’s dignity and authority.
Musa Mara was formally charged on Friday and his case will be heard on September 29.
It is to be remembered that in Mali, the military government seized power twice in 2020 and 2021.
In recent months, the government has banned political parties, especially after a public protest in May.
Musa Mara, who has been the prime minister for nine months, has emerged as a strong critic of the military government in recent days.
A month ago, the interim parliament of Mali gave General Esimi Guateta a five -year presidential term, which is renewed without elections.
General Guateta promised that in 2021, promised that elections would be held within a year, but the promise was not fulfilled, which led to a severe blow to the efforts of the restoration of democracy.
