Child Malnutrition in Afghanistan Has Reached Its Worst Level, The United Nations Has Issued a Warning
539 million dollars are urgently needed to provide assistance to a quarter of the country’s affected population.
A report by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has warned that Afghanistan is witnessing the most serious wave of child malnutrition.
According to the World News Agency, the WFP report said that $539 million is urgently needed to provide assistance to a quarter of the country’s affected population.
The report by the United Nations agency WFP further said that about 10 million people in Afghanistan are facing severe food insecurity.
The statement said that one in three children is suffering from stunted physical and mental development due to malnutrition.
The report said that the main reason for the increase in child malnutrition is the decrease in emergency food aid in the last two years, which is mainly due to the decrease in aid from international donor countries, especially the United States.
It should be remembered that in April 2025, President Donald Trump stopped food aid to Afghanistan, while the US provided $ 4.5 billion to the WFP last year, when Joe Biden was president.
According to the report, 60,000 Afghans have returned from Iran in the last two months, while the actual number may be much higher.
The agency says that in addition to Iran, $ 15 million is also urgently needed to help Afghan refugees returning to their homeland from around the world.
The UN agency WFP clarified that a total of $ 539 million will be needed by January 2026 to help families suffering from malnutrition. If this aid is not received in time, the lives of millions of Afghans, especially children, may be at risk.
It should be noted that since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan, international sanctions, reduced aid, the return of refugees, and climate challenges have made the situation extremely fragile.
