Australia's Big Decision: Announcement To Recognize Palestinian State Next Month
The decision is a major step towards promoting a two-state solution and ending violence in the Middle East
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced that Australia will recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September.
He said that the decision is a major step towards promoting a two-state solution and ending violence in the Middle East.
According to Anthony Albanese, the Palestinian Authority has made several promises in return for this decision, including keeping Hamas out of the future state, recognizing the peaceful existence of Israel, disarming, holding general elections, ending payments to the families of martyrs and prisoners, governance reforms, educational and financial transparency, and allowing international monitoring to prevent incitement to hatred and violence.
He said that this is an opportunity to grant the Palestinian people the right to self-determination in a way that completely removes Hamas from the region.
This decision has also been reinforced by the recent Arab League demand that Hamas relinquish control of Gaza and hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority.
