According to the international news agency, a military spokesman said that the incident occurred when military personnel were deactivating the weapons storage.
A statement issued by the Lebanese army said that an investigation into the incident is underway to determine the real cause of the explosion.
The death of 6 military personnel in the explosion has been confirmed, but the number of injured personnel was not given.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam expressed regret over the incident and called the deceased personnel national heroes.
The head of the UN peacekeeping force, Deodato Abagnale, also expressed condolences to the Lebanese army and their families.
