Bangladesh: Former police chief confesses crimes against humanity, Hasina Wajid has been charged
About 1,400 people were killed in attempts to crush students’ protests against Sheikh Hasina government
Former Bangladesh Inspector General of Police Chaudhry Abdullah Mamun has confessed to crimes against humanity during the protests last year as an important development in Dhaka.
At the same time, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid has been formally charged.
During a hearing on Thursday at the International Crime Tribunal (ICT), Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Taj -ul -Islam told reporters that the former IGP acknowledged his crimes and assured the court of cooperation.
He said that Mamun would provide all his information about the crimes committed during the uprising in July and August 2024. The court has also approved a separate residence to protect them.
According to UN data, about 1,400 people were killed in attempts to crush students’ protests against the Sheikh Hasina government from July to August last year. The ICT is now prosecuting Hussein’s deposed government and former top officials affiliated with the banned party Awami League.
The tribunal on Thursday rejected the lawyer’s request for termination of charges against Sheikh Hasina and his former Home Minister Asad Zaman Khan Kamal. Both persons have been formally charged in this case. Hussein Wajid’s government lawyer Aamir Hussain said the case was still in the early stages and there were several legal proceedings.
It is to be remembered that 77 -year -old Hussein Wajid fled to India by helicopter after the demonstrations, which ended his 15 -year -old rule. He ignored the order issued to return to Dhaka and has been prosecuted in his absence from June 1. They have at least five serious allegations, including failure to prevent the massacre, conspiracy, support, provocation and a co -crime.
It may be recalled that on July 2, Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to six months imprisonment in a separate case, declaring a contempt of court. Home Minister Asad Zaman Khan Kamal is also thought to be in India. Prosecutors say that all responsibility for the violence during the demonstrations is directly imposed on Sheikh Hasina.
