The separatist armed party Kurdistan Workers Party today formally surrendered and started implementing peace talks with Turkey.
According to the World News Agency, 30 Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) fighters began the process of surrendering their weapons during a symbolic ceremony in the Jashana Cave in the northern Iraqi region of Sulaimania on Friday.
The cave, where the arms burning ceremony was held. The past has been used as a Kurdish printing press.
Representatives from Iraqi Kurdistan President Nachiron Barzani, senior Kurdish leader Masood Barzani, Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and Iraqi and Kurdistan Interior Ministry attended the ceremony.
Some members of the Pro-Kurdish DEM Party from the Turkish government and officials of the Turkish Intelligence Agency were also present at the ceremony.
“I believe in peace and politics rather than weapons,” said Oujalan, the founder of the Kurdish organization imprisoned in Istanbul since 1999.
He appealed to his colleagues to follow the principle of peace and politics rather than war.
Ojalan promised that the process of surrendering from his organization’s job would be completed rapidly.
The event is being seen as a historic breakthrough towards the end of the decades -long conflict between Turkey and the PKK.
The weapons burners included four key PKK commanders.
It is to be noted that on May 12 this year, the PKK announced the dissolution and armed struggle and raised the voice for the rights of the Kurds in a democratic way.
Remember that PKK was founded by Abdullah Ojalan in 1984, after which his armed fighters launched a series of several attacks on Turkey.
More than 40,000 people have been killed in this armed struggle of the separatist Kurdish party.
