AI Scam Copies Marco Rubio’s Style to Launch Sophisticated Cyberattack on Officials
Forgery also copied Marco Rubio’s style of writing with the help of AI
One of the fraudsters contacted top US officials and foreign ministers through US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s artificial intelligence voice message.
According to US diplomacy, an unidentified man used the Signal app to contacted three foreign ministers, an American governor and a Congress member in a fake voice of Marco Rubio.
The unknown fraud, with the help of Article Facial Technology, not only the voice of Foreign Minister Marco Rubio but also the style of his writing and also sent written messages.
The unknown counterfeit created a fake signal account in mid -June called “Marco.rubio@state.gov”.
Voice messages and texts were sent from this fake account in which the audience was invited to speak on Signal.
The US Department of State’s statement said the cyber attack was aimed at misleading authorities and accessing sensitive information or systems.
The State Department has said that it will thoroughly investigate the incident and further security measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
It should be noted that the incident happened a few months after the Signalgate scandal, in which a journalist was mistakenly included in a group of US military and government officials. The group also included the Foreign Minister and the Defense Minister.
The US Defense Secretary shared information about the bridge of sensitive military operations in Yemen, which raised serious questions on security.
Later, it was discovered that former national security adviser Mike Walts had mistakenly joined the group “The Atlantic” editor Jeffrey Goldberg.
Waltz was removed from his post and Marco Rubio interim to take over national security. Waltz will now face a Senate hearing for the appointment of a US ambassador to the United Nations.
It should be noted that cyber security experts have warned that although apps like Signal are anchored, it can still be unreliable for government affairs. That is why in 2023, the Defense Department banned the exchange of sensitive information through Signal, WhatsApp and IMessage.
